Listening to my intuition

For years I have tried to make decisions using logic and reason, and I have developed the habit of ignoring my intuition. With intuition I mean thoughts that pop up, seemingly out of thin air, and in an unpredictable way. Recent experiences have helped me realize that ignoring this voice is a mistake, and I think the main reason I developed that habit is that I have spent the last twenty years writing software.

Eliminate the unnecessary, do what’s essential

If you seek tranquillity, do less. Or (more accurately) do what’s essential — what the logos of a social being requires, and in the requisite way. Which brings a double satisfaction: to do less, better. Because most of what we say and do is not essential. If you can eliminate it, you ‘ll have more time, and more tranquillity. Ask yourself at every moment, “Is this necessary?” But we need to eliminate unnecessary assumptions as well.

Overcoming your fears

This is the little man that lives inside me and tries to keep me in my comfort zone. A long time ago I used to play as a DM in a roleplaying game called Dungeons & Dragons. I played it during weekends with my high school friends. I loved it. We created stories together that transported us to fantastic worlds for hours, my friends and I were using our creativity to the maximum, we had such surrealistic and fun situations that we ended up laughing so long as to get muscle aches.

Trimming down

The last few months have been very educational. Besides moving to another country I have returned to work for eight hours a day and I have faced its attached constraints like having to wake up at the same time every day. During my time at university I got used to work on several projects at the same time but with the little free time that I find myself with now it has been necessary to trim down on projects and commitments.

Con la complejidad que muchos creamos en torno a nuestras vidas a veces se vuelve difícil discriminar lo importante de lo que no lo es. Un ejercicio que puede ayudarnos es el siguiente: Elige los tres o cuatro valores de la siguiente lista con los que te sientas más identificado o que sean los que más te gustaría que te definiesen.

Abraza las restricciones para quedarte con lo esencial

Durante mucho tiempo me he resistido a aceptar convivir con las restricciones. Cualquier objetivo era alcanzable siempre que le proporcionase suficiente tiempo. Las ideas de dar prioridad, centrarme en lo esencial y saber decir que “no” estaban en un segundo plano. A medida que iba perfeccionando mis métodos de organización, aumentando mis conocimientos y por el mero hecho de vivir mis objetivos aumentaban más rápidamente que el número de objetivos cumplidos.
